locks and fuses

Basically, burglars are lazy. They look for houses and apartments that are easily accessible and do not offer much resistance. Basically, this first assessment deals with the doors and windows, after all, these are the ideal entry points. But what can residents do? Well-stocked shops such as Wagner Sicherheit can help to find suitable solutions:

  • entrance doors – Modern locks with triple locking cylinders are considered to be very secure. Of course, these doors can also be pried open, but this means time and noise. Fortunately, new locks and latches can also be installed in old doors and door frames. Only new holes need to be drilled for the additional locking devices.
  • Doors: auxiliary device – if you also want to be on the safe side, you can have a bolt placed on the inside of the door. Depending on the model, it only slides into a device that is firmly anchored in the wall on one side, alternatively it locks the door firmly across its entire width. The bolts are usually locked from the inside with a lever, from the outside another lock is attached to the door, which of course corresponds to modern security guidelines.
  • window – it is often windows and balcony doors that are considered the target of attacks. The fact is that there are no absolutely burglar-proof windows and balcony doors: with a lot of time and effort, a break-in is always possible. In practice, it’s more about putting up as much resistance as possible. On average, a burglar looks for a new target after 90 seconds at the latest. Modern windows already offer a high resistance class against attempted break-ins.

However, it is often one’s own carelessness that leads to slumps. Windows left open are practically an invitation for all burglars. The same applies to terrace doors that are only pulled shut but not locked.

There have long been smart solutions to prevent forgotten open windows and doors. Door and window contacts can be attached in such a way that the tilted position of a window emits a clear alarm after a predetermined number of minutes. Windows that are not completely closed can also be secured. All of these alarm solutions also function as real alarm systems and/or support heating control.

Security technology: Systems and Co.

Alarm systems and other security technologies are popular and often very useful. However, there are always difficulties:

  • security cameras – they offer no protection if the recordings are overwritten after a short time. If the resident is on vacation and there is a burglary on Monday, the recorded data is useless if the tape is overwritten on Tuesday.
  • alarm systems – they often only serve to make noise. This is important because neighbors then take a closer look. But what if there are no direct neighbors? The alarm system must be able to do more than just switch on sirens.

However, there is a problem around alarm systems. In theory, they can be connected directly to the police, but homeowners are responsible for the costs if there are frequent false alarms. It makes more sense if the alarm system is connected to direct neighbors and, of course, to your own smartphone. This makes it easy to see whether a cat has triggered the system or whether someone is actually on the property.

It is important that the camera technology is always activated when the alarm system reports a problem – and that this data is now stored over a longer period of time. Most break-ins remain unsolved to this day simply because no evidence can be secured. An alarm system connected to the camera technology can solve the problem. This applies in particular when the data can be transferred to the smartphone in real time and thus made available to the police.

Safes: keep valuables safe

The fact is: Certain valuables should only be kept at home if a bank-like safe can be provided. This is where the insurance question comes in, because banks are responsible for ensuring that their secured lockers are secure. But how can small sums of money and other valuables be safely stored at home?

  • safe – there are dozens of safes for the home. It is important that these safety cabinets cannot be moved. If you look around online, you will find safes weighing thirty kilograms that can be placed anywhere in the house. The problem: Each thief still has thirty kilograms under his arm.
  • security – the safe must be secure. Double security is good, for example after a code also requires a key – or vice versa. At the same time, the safe should of course not be in the expected places. Wardrobes are one of the first things burglars look at.
  • Store what? – at most, important papers and documents, small amounts of cash and high-quality everyday jewelry belong in a safe at home. Other valuables must be placed in the bank’s safe deposit box.

Incidentally, a big mistake is to put the bank’s locker key and assignment in the safe. A simple key without any assignment is useless for thieves, but if there is a label with “Bank XY” on the key, the thieves also have access to the real values.

By the way, there have long been networked safes or cameras that switch on as soon as the lighting conditions change. A wildlife camera in the safe that takes pictures as soon as the door opens and uploads them directly to a server can be incredibly useful. Surely the burglary still takes place, but burglars are often careless in front of safes and look straight into the camera lens.

Conclusion – set the hurdles higher

If a house is not in the middle of nowhere, burglars are always under time pressure. You can’t risk fiddling around with windows and doors for minutes. Therefore, first of all, it is important to make access to the house itself more difficult. Security cameras that are installed on the doors and that upload images directly to the cloud can have a deterrent effect. A connection with the police, on the other hand, does not always make sense, because unnecessary operations are at the expense of the customer. Care must always be taken around the safes, as the safe itself must be secure and well installed. It doesn’t help if a burglar can easily take a security cabinet home with him.
